Las Ramblas runs 1.2 Kilometers through Barcelona, from Placa Catalunya with its major department stores down to Port Vell and the marina district. Las Ramblas is vibrant, colourful and fairly hectic day and night, and yes it can get busy but it is part of its charm because everyone is very friendly and laid back making a pleasure to wander through at your own pace.
The thing I really like about Las Ramblas is that it is truly a place where locals and tourists mingled and where both are equally catered for. Tourists can wander through shopping at the souvenir stalls and watching the myriad of street entertainers that are every few meters, whilst the locals come to purchase fresh flowers from one of the many florists stalls or to shop for pets and pets supplies.
The other thing Las Ramblas does very well is cafes and restaurants, so whether you just want to stop for a drink while you watch the world go by or you want a great meal you can find it on Las Ramblas. Although beware as it is busy and the must go to destination for tourists, restaurants can be a bit more expensive than you would find in some of the wonderful streets and squares just off main drag. Although even here you can find old favourites like McDonalds if you just want something familiar, quick and cheap.
We were amazed a the number of pet stalls, that stocked everything from chickens to chipmunks, as you walked by them you could hear the finches twittering and singing in their cages, almost saying please buy me. It is not a sight you see here in the UK usually so took us by surprise.
The other thing that fascinated us on Las Ramblas was the number and range of street performers, lots of different living statues through to jugglers and Michael Jackson wannabes.
No trip to Barcelona would be complete without walking through Las Ramblas, it is the walk to take in Barcelona. So relax, take your time and enjoy everything that Las Ramblas has to show you.
The other was a street entertainer on Las Ramblas who though he was Michael Jackson, this one gets them going a bit on YouTube, as viewers discuss the merits of his moonwalk.
